Vein Disorders

RGV Vein, Laser & Aesthetic Clinic offers minimally invasive methods of treating varicose veins, in an office setting, using a laser and local anesthesia. You will walk in and walk out, with minimal discomfort and can resume usual activity almost immediately.

Many people inherit vein disorders. The incidence is higher in women than men. In the United States almost 25% of adults suffer from painful and unsightly vein conditions.

Whether you suffer from painful varicose veins or unsightly spider veins our doctors and professional staff at RGV Vein, Laser & Aesthetic Clinic can discuss your options regarding laser versus surgical treatments.

Venous Disease

Veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart after it has delivered essential nutrients to our body's tissues. They have one-way valves every few inches that help keep blood flowing in the right direction. If these valves leak or become blocked, some blood may flow backwards and pool in the vein. Blood pressure rises and the vein weakens under the additional strain so that its elastic walls balloon outward. Any of the body's veins may be affected by venous disease, including the superficial veins just beneath the skin, the deep veins near the bones, and the perforating veins that carry blood between the two.

Also called venous insufficiency, venous disease can result in a number of cosmetic disfigurements and health problems, from spider veins and varicose veins to blood clots and skin ulcers. Common symptoms include swelling and discomfort as well as skin discoloration, skin thickening, spider veins at the ankles, and leg ulcers.

Spider Veins

Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are small, thin blood vessels visible beneath the skin. They appear most commonly on the face and legs and may look like a series of lines, tree branches, or spider/web like shapes with a dark center. It is estimated that they affect nearly half of adult women in the U.S.

Spider veins are caused by a variety of factors, including heredity, pregnancy, weight gain, long periods of standing, and certain medications. They often appear red or blue, and because they form on the face, thighs, calves and ankles, many patients are bothered by the way they look. Others seek medical treatment for uncomfortable symptoms such as aching, burning, swelling, and cramping.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are dilated and ropy appearing blue vessels visible under the skin, often a 1/4 inch or larger in diameter. Varicose veins typically cause pain, fatigue and swelling - and sometimes even more serious complications.

Your legs are made up of a network of veins. A healthy vein contains valves which open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Varicose veins are caused by damaged or diseased valves which result in backward flow of blood in your legs, a condition known as venous reflux. This can cause blood to pool in your legs and lead to symptoms such as pain, swelling and varicose veins.
