Ambulatory phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure performed as an alternative to traditional vein removal surgery for the treatment of spider and varicose veins. Performed under local anesthesia, ambulatory phlebectomy removes medium to large abnormal veins through tiny incisions in the leg. Since veins are extremely collapsible, even the largest veins can be removed using this safe procedure.
Ambulatory phlebectomy is performed in your doctor's office under local anesthesia. First, your doctor will identify the damaged veins and mark them to ensure accurate removal and to help preserve the health of surrounding veins and tissue. Tiny incisions will then be made to extract the veins section by section. The procedure takes about 45 to 60 minutes to perform, and most patients do not experience any pain or discomfort.
After damaged veins have been removed, other healthy veins in the leg will absorb the excess blood and reinstate a normal blood flow. Functioning will not be affected by removing the damaged veins, as there are many surrounding veins to take over
